While competing on day one of the 2022 Scottish National Short Course Championships, Daniel Wiffen fired off a new Irish national record in the men’s 400m IM.

21-year-old Wiffen, who trains at Loughborough University, stopped the clock in a time of 4:11.05 en route to bronze. Taking the meet title was Evan Jones of Stirling who touched in 4:07.78 while teammate George Smith hit 4:08.78 for runner-up.

As for Wiffen, the freestyle ace obliterated his previous personal best entering this 3-day meet. His prior career-quickest rested at the 4:39.84 from December 2017. That means his swim tonight hacked well over 28 seconds from that performance to check in as Ireland’s fastest ever.

The previous Irish national standard stood at the 4:12.13 Olympian Brendan Hyland put on the books at the 2019 European Short Course Championships.

Tonight’s 400m IM performance marks Wiffen’s 3rd national record from just 2022 alone. He logged a new Irish mark of 7:46.32 at this year’s long course World Championships while also establishing a new record of 14:51.79 in the long course 1500m freestyle at the Commonwealth Games.

As he cruised to gold in the 1500 freestyle, spearheading what would turn into a prolific three days for Team Ireland at the European U23 Championships, Dan Wiffen was slightly confused.
